Just How Dirty Are Hot Tubs, Really?

For centuries, communal bathing has been a popular practice, offering both cleanliness and pleasure. While ancient cultures indulged in freshwater and sea baths for spiritual and relaxation purposes, modern times have seen a rise in personal hot tubs and Jacuzzis. The recent pandemic has further contributed to increased sales of these luxurious home spa amenities.
However, for those who don’t own a hot tub, local gyms, spas, and even hospitals often provide communal hot tubs for therapeutic use, particularly in relieving joint inflammation for patients with arthritis. The warm water in these hot tubs helps relax muscles, ease sore joints, and create a sense of psychological well-being through its comforting properties and the shared experience with others.
Considering Bacteria, Viruses, and Fungi
It’s important to acknowledge that when we enter a hot tub or Jacuzzi, whatever is on our skin is deposited into the swirling warm water. This includes the approximately 100mg of feces that is typically present between our buttock cheeks. Consequently, while enjoying the relaxing hot tub experience, it’s inevitable to inhale or ingest bacteria, viruses, and fungi from other bathers.
The number of bacteria, sweat, and fecal deposits in the water increases with the number of people using the hot tub. Additionally, since hot tub owners are often advised to change the water only every three months, bacteria can thrive and multiply. To mitigate this, hot tubs with water recirculation systems usually incorporate microbe-removing filters and employ disinfectants such as chlorine, bromine, or other microbicides to control bacterial growth.
Safety Considerations and Proper Hygiene
The chemicals used in hot tub maintenance, such as chlorine, can cause skin and eye irritation. Therefore, it is essential for hot tub users to shower both before and after using the facilities. Moreover, the high temperature of hot tub water, usually around 104°F or 40°C, can pose health risks, including core overheating, fainting, loss of consciousness, and potentially drowning. Pregnant women, children, and individuals with underlying health conditions should consult their doctors before using hot tubs. It is recommended to limit hot tub sessions to around 15 minutes and ensure proper supervision.

Maintaining Cleanliness in Public Hot Tubs
While personal hot tubs can be relatively safe in terms of microbiological contamination, public hot tubs in hotels or spas can harbor high levels of infection-causing bacteria, especially if the water is recycled. The root cause of this issue lies in poor adherence to personal hygiene guidelines and inadequate maintenance of water treatment systems. Improperly maintained public hot tubs can lead to outbreaks of infections caused by bacteria that thrive in water.
Some of these bacteria include E.coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Legionella pneumoniae. They can cause various infections, ranging from gastrointestinal issues and skin infections to urinary tract infections and respiratory diseases like Legionnaires’ disease. Legionella bacteria, in particular, are commonly found in the water droplets produced by hot tub steam, and inhaling contaminated steam can lead to severe pneumonia.
Recognizing the Signs of an Unsanitary Hot Tub
If you still wish to enjoy a hot tub experience, it’s crucial to be able to identify potential risks. One clear indicator of an unsanitary hot tub is a strong smell caused by the combination of chlorine disinfectant and bodily fluids like urine and sweat. When these substances mix, they form chloramine, a pungent chemical that can irritate the eyes. Therefore, if the hot tub has a noticeable odor of chloramine, it likely has low levels of disinfectant and high levels of bacteria. It’s important to note that even if the water appears clean and clear, a strong smell indicates potential unsafety. Additionally, over time, the water may become murkier if proper chemical treatments are not administered regularly.
Ultimately, maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in hot tubs and spas is of utmost importance. Whether it’s a personal hot tub or a public facility, understanding the risks and taking necessary precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Regular water maintenance, adherence to personal hygiene guidelines, and being aware of signs of potential contamination are essential steps in promoting a healthy spa environment. By prioritizing hygiene, you can fully embrace the relaxation and rejuvenation benefits that hot tubs and spas have to offer while minimizing any associated risks.

Man Converts Plane Into Airbnb With Hot Tub

Steven Northam, a semi-retired British entrepreneur, embarked on an extraordinary venture by purchasing the front end of a vintage Boeing 737-200 from eBay for $6,165. The 38-year-old visionary saw this as an opportunity to create a distinctive luxury Airbnb vacation rental. The project aimed to combine fun and quirkiness with a potential business venture.
However, acquiring a plane proved to be more challenging than a typical online purchase. Northam had to arrange for a haulage firm and a crane to transport the plane, which took nearly three months to coordinate. The aircraft was originally used by Chichester College to train future flight crew but had been neglected for over a decade, resulting in a rather dilapidated condition upon its arrival at Northam’s home in Winchester, England.
Undeterred by the plane’s sorry state, Northam embarked on an extensive renovation project, both inside and outside the aircraft, which incurred a total cost of around $18,500. The interior required a complete overhaul, as it was a time capsule from the plane’s original era. The renovation process commenced in July 2022 and spanned three months, with Northam undertaking the project single-handedly. His efforts were even documented by the crew of the Channel 4 show “George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces.”
The initial step involved removing the majority of the seats, reinforcing the floor, and installing new carpeting. Northam then transformed the empty space into distinct sections, creating alcoves for beds, seating areas, and a kitchenette using stud walls. While the interior features modern technology, such as high-speed WiFi, Smart TVs, and Xboxes, Northam was careful to retain many of the plane’s original elements, including the seats with seatbelts, overhead storage lockers, and even the original restroom. To add an element of uniqueness, a glass floor was incorporated, offering a view into the cargo hold area.
One of the standout features of the renovated plane is an innovative hot tub made from the inlet cowling of a plane engine. Alongside deck chairs and space for a barbecue, this creative addition provides guests with a one-of-a-kind experience. Another highlight is the cockpit flight simulator, which captures the attention of aviation enthusiasts. Equipped with a gaming PC and a large curved monitor, the simulator allows guests to immerse themselves in a realistic flight experience. The fusion of entertainment options and distinctive features has already generated significant interest from potential Airbnb guests.

Although Northam is still awaiting planning permission from the local council to officially list the plane on Airbnb, there is already a considerable list of individuals eager to stay. The anticipated cost per night is around £150 ($185.70). Families with children have shown particular interest, but the rental is also expected to appeal to those seeking a unique venue for parties or a weekend of leisure and enjoyment.
Northam takes great pride in his remarkable accomplishment and envisions using the revenue generated from the Airbnb rental to pursue future projects. He has set his sights on transforming a truck into an armored camper van, which promises to be yet another extraordinary venture. With his passion for converting unusual spaces into fascinating accommodations, Northam’s innovative spirit continues to thrive, leaving us eagerly anticipating his next endeavor.
